Because of Winn Dixie
This is an example of how a 5th Grader sythesized material from class reading assignment based on the book "Becasue of Winn Dixie". She composed a poem about the feelings of Opal, a girl in the story who misses Winn-Dixie. Using the chords C/G/Am/F, she put a melody to the poem, added a variety of instrumental techiques, and ended with a melismatic acapella ending. I think this in an excellent example of alternative authenic assessment and how the Arts can be integrated into literacy programs.
