Dear G.A.T.E parents, I am honored to be a part of the outstanding G.A.T.E. Saturday Academy at Oxnard School District this year. I am currently a third grade teacher at McAuliffe Elementary school and am excited for the opportunity to work with G.A.T.E. scholars across the district! As your child participated in three different courses today, they became experienced leaders with a focus on the Universal Theme of “Exploration”. Exploration requires taking risks while confronting the unknown. Exploration may result in new findings or the confirmation of old findings. In all three classes your child participates in during the Saturday G.A.T.E. Academy, your child will be using the Depth and Complexity Icons. These icons are visual prompts designed to help students go beyond surface level understanding of a concept and enhance their ability to think critically. These critical thinking tools help students dig deeper into a concept (depth) and understand that concept with greater complexity. The first Saturday we focused on Language of the Discipline, Details, Unanswered Questions, and Multiple Perspectives. During Mrs. Hoffman’s session, we are exploring endangered animals and species. As we begin our lesson by taking a close look into California’s coast, we will then break out into research teams and broadening our inquiry. Your child will be working with a team to explore these serious issues, address unanswered questions we may have, consider multiple perspectives and create proposals for solutions. By the second Saturday, we have will develop our proposals and present our solutions on the last Saturday that we meet. Students are encouraged to continue their research between the Saturday dates. I have some recommended website links available through my class website: http://hoffman31.weebly.com/gate.html I am fascinated to see each scholar’s findings and solution proposals each research team creates! Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. Best, Tracey Hoffman [email protected] McAuliffe Elementary School ![]()

Endangered Species Project
Objective: Students will investigate causes of endangerment and efforts being taken to conserve species and create a presentation, webpage, poster, or pamphlet to raise awareness about the species.
Your product should contain the following information.
1. What is the common and scientific name of the animal?
2. Where does it live, what is it's natural habitat?
3. What does it eat? What is it's role in the ecosystem?
4. Describe the features of the animal, draw a picture, or attach a photo. Remember to give credit if you attach a photo to the location of the original photo (such as wikipedia)
5. Describe the causes of endangerment.
6. Propose ways that the animal can be helped, include any laws or projects that are already in existence to help the animal. Examples might be adaptions for the animal to survive, creating an informational brochure to help inform the public, crossbreeding the animal to create a new animal, creating a new environment, or proposing a new law.
As you design your publication, imagine that you want to convince others to donate to the cause or help the animal in some way. Treat it like a persuasive essay, your goal is to get people interested and to get them involved!
